Factors in the social and physical environment which impose a direct influence on the opportunity to engage in physical activity include:

  •       Social inequality including income inequality and education inequality, both of which may have an effect on activity levels and sedentary behaviour (Grzywacz, & Marks, 2001). Coming from a family of medium income earning I am able to partake in extracurricular activities beneficial for my health. Whereas people that may be from low income household and suffer from chronic conditions may find it harder to participate in physical activity therefore jeopardising their health.

  • Environmental determinants include access to public green areas, provision of safe areas to walking e.g. On street, as well as the design of residential areas, which may or may not include walkable neighbourhood routes (Cohen-Mansfield, Marx, Biddison & Guralnik, 2004). Living in a suburb that parks and fields are easily accessible, it promotes me to go outdoors more often and stay active, whereas people that are living in high rise buildings and built up cities do not have parks near by and have high crime rates in their areas therefore have a higher chance of developing chronic conditions
